I don’t understand you woman, you have the most beautiful job on the planet, creating life. What more of a higher calling is there then that. i have children and don’t want more. women with children don’t always want 50-11 children. shocking.

Wow, OP is a fuckwad.
You can’t be that fucking dense.
“You make babies, that should be the only thing you ever do and you should be happy with that alone.”
Like despite all your cissexist and sexist fuckery, do you really think that should be enough to fulfill ones entire happiness for the entirety of their LIFE? I had so much fun carrying and raising babies that’s all I ever did. Shit, up until I was 16 and ready to pop out the chilluns, I in fact did nothing but play house and study how to cook to feed said chilluns. It was a thrill.

People ask me why I’m angry. It’s because I’m constantly having to defend my academic choices, my perspective, from assholes like the OP. Women’s and Gender Studies is a massive field that includes artists, scientists, dancers, poets, sex workers, librarians, professors, young girls, young boys, anti-colonial and anti-imperialist movements, economic liberation movements, media accountability initiatives, anti-war initiatives, immigration reform advocacy, reproductive justice organizing and shit ton more. Yet ignorance like the OP is constantly elevated over the scholarship and work of generations of marginalized people.

Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died.

Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: “Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury – you name it.” Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to “dispose” of cheaply. When I asked Mr Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: “Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention.”

At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia’s seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish stocks by overexploitation – and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300m-worth of tuna, shrimp, and lobster are being stolen every year by illegal trawlers. The local fishermen are now starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: “If nothing is done, there soon won’t be much fish left in our coastal waters.”

This is the context in which the “pirates” have emerged. Somalian fishermen took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least levy a “tax” on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coastguard of Somalia – and ordinary Somalis agree. The independent Somalian news site WardheerNews found 70 per cent “strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defence”.

No, this doesn’t make hostage-taking justifiable, and yes, some are clearly just gangsters – especially those who have held up World Food Programme supplies. But in a telephone interview, one of the pirate leaders, Sugule Ali: “We don’t consider ourselves sea bandits. We consider sea bandits [to be] those who illegally fish and dump in our seas.” William Scott would understand.

Did we expect starving Somalis to stand passively on their beaches, paddling in our toxic waste, and watch us snatch their fish to eat in restaurants in London and Paris and Rome? We won’t act on those crimes – the only sane solution to this problem – but when some of the fishermen responded by disrupting the transit-corridor for 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply, we swiftly send in the gunboats.

The story of the 2009 war on piracy was best summarised by another pirate, who lived and died in the fourth century BC. He was captured and brought to Alexander the Great, who demanded to know “what he meant by keeping possession of the sea.” The pirate smiled, and responded: “What you mean by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, while you, who do it with a great fleet, are called emperor.” Once again, our great imperial fleets sail – but who is the robber?

“You are being lied to about pirates” by Johann Hari

this is from 2009, i think, but the issues brought up are still relevant even though it’s 2013. instead of attacking imperialism & neocolonialism it is easier to attack somali ~pirates~. no one talks about resistance vis-a-vis piracy, or millitancy as survival. let’s talk about the exploitation and plundering of our resources in pursuit of and in defense of empire.

Well this is not surprising at all. Colorblind casting by the Royal Shakespeare Company for “The Orphan of Zhao”, a Chinese play, resulted in a cast that is predominantly white and with all the leading roles played by white actors. Of course, the RSC has defended their decision as neutral and fair:

The RSC defended its decisions on two counts. One is that they saw “lots and lots” of East Asian actors but in the end opted for “colour blind casting” and simply cast the “best actor for the role”. Generally, Joe Public is satisfied with this response, but a closer examination will reveal that the actors playing leading roles at the RSC are usually in the British classical theatre “circuit” which is very much a “no go zone” for East Asian actors.

East Asian actors can generally only audition for poorly written tokenistic roles, often in awful broken English and possessing not a jot of the wit, charisma and sex appeal of a Harry Hotspur, a Jack Worthing, a Hedda Gabler or even a Horatio. This makes it nigh on impossible for an East Asian Actor to build a track record that would make a company like the RSC feel secure in casting them in a lead role. I fully support casting “the best actor for the role” but only when there is a fully level playing field for the “best” to be assessed fairly. I also support “colour blind casting” but only as a mechanism for creating opportunities for actors from minority groups for whom chances are few and far between–not as a means of protecting those opportunities for the dominant social demographic.

That’s precisely the problem with colorblind policies of any kind—they assume POC and whites are starting on a level playing field, which is demonstrably false. If employers don’t make a conscious effort to hire minorities, then they’re contributing to a vicious circle in which minorities who are historically underrepresented in an industry are guaranteed to remain underrepresented.

As well, this kind of whitewashing of roles promotes the idea that race/ethnicity consists of nothing more than putting on the right costume or makeup, that POC are just white people + something else, that whiteness is neutral. Whitewashing is just the ‘PC’ version of black/brown/yellowface (and sometimes, as in the case of Cloud Atlas, they go hand-in-hand).

Whitewashing is an assertion of white supremacy. Think about what the casting decisions for “The Orphan of Zhao”, Cloud Atlas, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Prince of Persia really signal: the people in charge not only think people of color aren’t good enough to be leads, but they aren’t even good enough to play themselves.

Finally, the fact that whitewashing still happens these days (and frequently too) means that white people have zero right to complain about a hypothetical black James Bond or Asian Doctor Who. Any honky who does can take a flying leap off the fucking planet.

Everyone knows that white people are better at being Asian than Asian people - haven’t you watched Karate Kid? / sarcasm

Luxury Italian fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana presented their Spring 2013 collection on Sunday — and while the toy soldier printed dresses and striped rompers were kitschy, it was the images of dark-skinned, slave-like African women splashed on burlap-sack frocks and adorning the ears of models that made some people cringe.

In fact, the folks over at Refinery29.com called the looks “cartoonish, debasing, subaltern imagery that would make even your politically incorrect Grandpa think twice.” Ouch.

Huffington Post has a poll asking whether or not people find this racist. In my humble opinion, yes it is. I really wish the fashion industry would stop using black women’s bodies as accessories and costumes. It’s beyond insulting. Right now, the poll is at 42% of people thinking it’s racist and 57% thinking it’s not. I don’t have the heart to look at the comments.

……….

you need to delete your life if you don’t think this is racist.

I LOVE THAT ITS A FUCKING VOTE

Hate or love that its a vote. Just go vote.

Think about how many ppl are gonna see those results. If its overwhelmingly (90%+) on the “its racist” side, it may make ppl think.

Or @ the very least, feel shame.

Shame on you, D&G.

But wait, there’s MORE!

well.. why would they use it if they think its something of disgust. seems to me that the racists are the ones thinking that the idea behind this was of malicious intent. is it wrong for someone or anyone to think that darkskin is beautiful enough to present? if the images were lightskin would you catch the same feelings?

and sidenote, i aint never seen no image of a slave with flowers in her hair. looks more like a brazilian inspiration.

just my opinion. it’s funny how you all think it’s ugly and they ones presenting it are the racist ones. foh.

Pick up a history book. Or a dictionary. Hell use Wikipedia & look up Blackamoor. Or just shut the fuck up until you know something about the topic being discussed.

oops. my bad for not jumping straight into my feelings. and actually looking at the fashion show in context.

but your favorite big box retailer stereotypes you all into market segments, and this is the most racist shit the fashion industry does.

but ya’ll still runnin around in F21 “tribal print”

foh.

I did look at it in context. The actual social and historical context of this imagery and what it means in an industry that erases actual black women. Fuck out of here, if you think hand waving depictions of black women as slaves in a runway show isn’t problematic. And boo, I’m grown. I don’t shop at Forever Ripoff. But thanks for playing!

oh forreal? i guess Aspire Magazine wasn’t featured in Vogue. i guess we are being erased. damn.

blahhhh. i can’t with people who dig so deep to make themselves angry.

I can’t with people who don’t bother to look past the end of their own nose.

you’re right. my bad. i’m so wrong for interpreting this my own way and having a different perception than you.

Ha! Like Dolce & Gabbana didn’t know what they were doing. I say, break into D&G if they actually think they’re selling this shit, light it on fire, and stomp on the fucking ashes. I also love the white-centric liberal online media asking “is this racist?”

Re: Blackamoors

“As jewelry, such figures usually appear in antique Venetian (though nowadays they can be made anywhere) earrings, bracelets, cuff links, and brooches. Some contemporary craftsmen continue to make individual pieces, but it is rare because of modern issues with the depiction of Black people as “exotic” and decorative.

The blackamoor is typically depicted with a head covering, usually a turban, and covered in rich jewels and gold leaf. It is usually male. They are typically enamelled, carved from ebony or painted black to contrast with the bright colors of the embellishments. Depictions may only represent the head, or head and shoulders, facing the viewer in a symmetrical pose.

In decorative sculpture the full body is depicted, either to hold trays as virtual servants or bronze sconces to hold candles or light fixtures. They may be incorporated into small stands, tables, or andirons. They are often portrayed in pairs. Andrea Brustolon (1662–1732) was the most important sculptor of blackamoors. Often these blackamoors are in acrobatic positions that would be impossible to hold for any extended length of time for a real person.”

Mhmmm….
Natural Hair, the term has mostly been used by the black hair community…and now that it’s become a bigger community and more “mainstream”, I’ve seen more white people use the term as well. Natural hair mostly meaning not using a chemical to straighten our hair. Yes technically we all have natural hair when you don’t use chemicals, etc…so yes white people have natural hair.
No one is saying that white people don’t have curly hair, some of them do have very curly and thick hair. But when they start calling their hair afros and fros because it’s messy or hard to manage..that’s when I see major problem. My hair natural hair type shouldn’t be considered messy or hard to manage, because it’s not.

This is a motherfucking FAIL.

What am I even reading? who is this tumblr run by? i have a serious problem not only with this ‘confession of epic fucking fail and fuckery’ and the idea that a non-Black person runs a tumblr that uses the term ‘kinky’ (or a derivative of that word) to describe hair. NOPE.

Why I love Scarlett Johansson:

Reporter: I have a question to Robert and to Scarlett. Firstly to Robert, throughout Iron Man 1 and 2, Tony Stark started off as a very egotistical character but learns how to fight as a team. And so how did you approach this role, bearing in mind that kind of maturity as a human being when it comes to the Tony Stark character, and did you learn anything throughout the three movies that you made? And to Scarlett, to get into shape for Black Widow did you have anything special to do in terms of the diet, like did you have to eat any specific food, or that sort of thing?
Scarlett: “How come you [Robert] get the really interesting existential question, and I get the like, “rabbit food” question?”

Summer is wedding season for Carefree White Girl! So what’s new in CFWG wedding land?! I heard through the grapevine she consulted with some friends and said (I’m paraphrasing) “let’s have a themed wedding and let’s have it be colonialism! And let’s do it in South Africa!! YAY!”
So Carefree White Girl did exactly that. She planned and planned, something Carefree White Girl does not normally do. She procured all of the trappings of colonialism possible, including but not limited to, holding the wedding in South Africa (what’s appartheid? what IS that?!) and hiring REAL LIVE Africans to be slaves servants. One wedding attendee commented on just how gloriously authentic Carefree White Girl’s wedding was:
“When we arrived at The Cowshed we literally could not believe our eyes! Colonial everything! Army tents filled with Persian rugs, Union Jack flags and antique furniture, trophies filled with Roses and this was only the bar. The reception was equally decked out. Antique travel chests, clocks, globes and binoculars and an awesome Zebra skin. Dave and Chantal did it right. They hired actual colonial pieces from a prop-house that we put them in touch with in Pretoria. It was truly authentic.”
Carefree White Girl had a vision. And her vision was to relive the good old days where the cult of domesticity and slavery ruled! A time when the only existing and acceptable standard of beauty was the Carefree White Girl. Brilliant! Carefree White Girl conceived herself in her most desirable element: the 1600s - early 1800s. Who could want for more?
Certainly not those very dark and docile Africans hired as servants for the wedding? Nope, not them. What of them you might ask? Well, meh, who cares actually. The wedding wasn’t about THEM! The wedding was about Carefree White Girl’s vision: about the beauty, the rustic and unchartered romantic vision of a landscape emancipated from technology. It was about the romantic vision of a simpler time, a time when the rights of Black people, well, didn’t exist, cause, you know, they were like, ENSLAVED. Cause they would have been required to be the fucking servants at CFWG’s wedding not hired. Because if they didn’t they would have been beat to a bloody pulp. But who cares about reliving hell when there are old wooden chests and Persian rugs!!!!

i think the most histerically hypocritical issue with this bullshit film is that they were actually able to travel to Dubai (right?? am i wrong about the place) AND film the movie AND get actors to act in it—-but then spent half the movie talking shit about how conservative and backward and repressive the culture is? THEN HOW GOES YOU FILMING THAT SHIT.

fucking what? only the enlightened/poor folks showed up to play repressed Brown people in your movie.

As someone who grew up in the UAE (mostly in Dubai but I visited Abu Dhabi several times), this shit is not only racist and disrespectful, it’s wildly exaggerated. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are incredibly cosmopolitan, and if some fool ass white woman dropped her condoms and started going off, most Emirati folk (btw, the UAE is almost 90% expatriate populate, so most of the populance isn’t wearing burqas or dishdashas) would just laugh.

A crossover-episode with Arthur/Merlin and Marcus/Esca (from the movie The Eagle) would be breath-taking because of all the gay and bromance!

Can I just chime in here? Gay and bromance are NOT THE SAME THING. Bromance is two dude-bros (who usually benefit from while, male, cisgender privilege), who’re friends, who make ‘no-homo’ quips to defend their masculinity et cetera, ‘Bromance’ in pop culture is increasingly about letting white, cisgender males (who already get 99% of pop culture representation) take center stage at the expense of women and people of colour, with the hook being their no-homo closeness, their almost-hugs, their banter, and other fanservicey gay-baiting that writers deploy to draw legions of clueless fangirls. THAT is bromance. Gay? Gay is an identity, a sexual orientation.  Gay men have romantic relationships with each other, they don’t just punch each other on the arm with a meaningful wink afterwards. They eat, sleep, fuck, laugh, make love, care for and love each other. AND THERE’S STILL VERY FEW OF THEM ON TV. Don’t tell me about Sherlock and Merlin, these are NOT canonically gay characters, they are bromances **see above** Bromance is when the men in question still hold on to every ounce of their straight white male cis gender privilege. They can joke around, but at the end of the day they can WALK AWAY, with the constitutionally protected right to marriage, without fearing street harassment and hate crimes, without having to listen to why ‘God’ thinks they’re lives are an abomination. Gay is not a goddamn fetish and squee-inducer you can toss around on the same footing with bromance. THEY ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE SAME THING and if you feel the urge to use them both in the same sentence without clear differentiation then you need to fucking evaluate your appropriative bullshit.
